Opening a Bottle x Dedalus

When you think of the Italian countryside, odds are you envision Tuscany: a land of green fields, hilltop farmhouses, cypress-lined lanes and vineyards, vineyards, vineyards.

In this educational, at-home tasting conducted on Zoom, writer/photographer and Italian wine expert Kevin Day of the wine publication Opening a Bottle will lead us on a guided tasting and tour of Chianti Classico and Montalcino — the two crown jewels of Tuscan wine — and tell us how these places are changing with the times (often, for the better). We will also explore a unique white wine from the area.

Day will be coming to us fresh off a 10-day research trip to Tuscany which will include visits with 22 wineries. His vivid photography and storytelling approach to wine education — combined with his relaxed, ask-me-anything personality — offers a wonderful counterpoint to many wine seminars.

For this class, Kevin will lead a tasting of a Vernaccia di San Gimignano (white), a Chianti Classico and a Rosso di Montalcino. Guests who choose to participate in the tasting component can find these wines available for purchase at Dedalus (1825 Pearl St, Boulder). Plan on a budget of between $55-$100 for these supplemental wines.

One ticket is good for a single log-in. There is a limit of 25 tickets for this class, but you are welcome to invite friends over to expand the tasting if you wish. Kevin will be available for questions, conversation and shared tasting notes at different intervals during the course.

Kevin Day is a wine writer and photographer and the founder of Opening a Bottle. He has passed the Wine Scholar Guild’s Italian Wine Scholar™ and French Wine Scholar™ exams, both with Highest Honors. He continues to be a member of this wine-education organization and writes for them periodically.

In 2019, Kevin was shortlisted as the “Emerging Wine Writer of the Year” by the Louis Roederer Wine Writers’ Awards. He has also been twice nominated for the Millesima Blog Awards in the Wine Reporter category. Opening a Bottle was also nominated for “Best Individual Blog” by the International Association of Culinary Professionals in 2019.
